The New Studio-
Cold Working shop
>> Assembled here are machines for cold
working glass: cutting, engraving, shape grinding, smoothing, and polishing.
These techniques can be used before or after hot working the glass to create
additional layers of interest in a finished piece. Of course, cold work can also
stand alone as a
creative expression in and of itself
(older work Here >>).

"Glass Cutting" is a term to distinguish engraved glass from glass that is worked on a larger scale with deeper grinding to create a more 3D surface for light to play on. This type of work fully polished is seen in many functional pieces referred to in general as “cut crystal”.
These are for use on the large lathe. Engraving glass by use of stone wheels goes back thousands of years. Modern glass working now relies heavily on diamond impregnated tools. But stone still leaves a superior surface to what the harsh action of diamonds leaves behind.
